Stand Back

Written by S. Nicks

No one looked as I walked by Just an invitation would have been just fine Said no to him again and again First he took my heart, then he ran No, no one knows how I feel Or what I mean unless you read between my lines One man walked away from me You know, first he took my hand He said, "Take me!" Stand back, stand back In the middle of my room I did not hear from you, well It's alright, it's alright You could be standing in a line (Standing in a line) You could be standing in a line I would... Do not turn away, my friend Well, like a willow, well, I can bend No man, said he called my name You know, no man came Well, so I walked on down the line away from you Well, maybe my attention was more than I could do, well One man said he would not fall But he asked me for too much He said, "Well, take it all!" Stand back, stand back In the middle of my room I did not hear from you, well It's alright, it's alright You could be standing in a line (Standing in a line) To be standing in a line I would... Well, so I walked on down the line away from you Well, maybe my attention was more than I could do, well One man said he would not fall But he asked me for too much He said, "Take me!" Stand back, stand back In the middle of my room I did not hear from you, well It's alright, it's alright To be standing in a line (Standing in a line) Ooh, well, you could be standing in a line I would... Well, I feel I need a little sympathy Well, I feel I need a little sympathy Well, I feel I need a little sympathy Well, you could be standin' in (Stand back) Well, you could be standin' in (Stand back) Well, you could to be standin' in (Stand back) Why don't you take me home? He says, "What don't you just take me home? (Stand back) Why don't you take me home? Well, you could be standin' in (Stand back) Well, you could be standin' in (Stand back) Well, you could be standin' in it (Stand back) Well, you could be standin' in it (Stand back) Standin' in it

Original Version Appears on "The Wild Heart" (1983)

WEBMISTRESS speculates

As I say in my speculations for the original version of Stand Back, I believe this song expresses regret that the one that she truly wanted - Lindsey - was not the one she ended up with. There are some interesting changes in the live version, however. One of the changes is the original "Take me home" to "Take me" or, later, "Take it all." Lindsey wanted to give her his world, if she'd just "take it." Take his world, take him, take it all. But then there's the second change - "he asked me for too much" instead of "he asked me for my love." Lindsey asked her for too much when he told her she should take him. He wanted her to give up too much of herself. So it didn't work out and she had to tell him "Stand back."
