Heart of the Dream

Written & Sung: J. Stewart; Guitar: L. Buckingham

Here I am, in the heart of the land Where they sell it on the run and they steal it if they can Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Oh, it's heartbreak alley on the coast highway They never made girls like that in my day Livin' in the heart of the dream Livin' in the heart of the dream Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Oh, I'm livin' in the heart Livin' in the heart Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Oh, it's slow take, slow shake, Perrier and earthquakes Everybody's waitin' for the day they get the big break Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Here I am, with my ass in the sand Gettin' my goodies with a rock'n'roll band Livin' in the heart of the dream Livin' in the heart of the dream Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land And I'm living in the heart Living in the heart Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land, yeah Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Hell, I got it all, and I still want more I'm looking for the west, feet on the shore Livin' in the heart of the dream I'm livin' in the heart of the dream Yeah, I'm livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land And I'm living in the heart Livin' in the heart Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Livin' in the heart of the dream In the promised land Livin' in the heart of the dream...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Unlike most of John Stewart's songs, this chorus does nothing for me, although I like the verses. While the songs are completely different, my complaint about this song is similar to my complaint about The Ledge: there you are, rocking along, and then Lindsey goes and repeats "someone oughtta" until the momentum is totally ruined. That's what happens here, in my opinion.

Lyrically, however, I just love it! It's a great mixture of cynicism and exuberence about La-la land and that line about Perrier and earthquakes is terrific! For lyrics like this I'll swallow my dislike of the chorus and listen to it anyway!
