WEBMISTRESS speculates:
This song has an edge to it, but on examination of the lyrics, it is actually uplifting despite its minor sound. It's a bitter "optimism" though - not like the bright-eyed optimism of Christine's upbeat Don't Stop. Egan's attitude here is more of "I'll never find love so I better make it on my own or I won't make it at all." In his words, "you should've known that all you can do is make it alone." Just a sidenote, but I bet Lindsey was nodding his head in agreement as he played the guitar part to that verse that says, "She left you to cry/You can't believe that her love was a lie/But don't be downhearted, your life is your own/Believe in yourself and make it alone" (apparently things were tense in the studio between them as they helped Egan, big surprise there!)
