Steal Your Heart Away

 Written by L. Buckingham

All alone we go all day after day All alone we suffer Oh, to steal your heart away It's the same old thing in the same old way All alone we suffer Oh, to steal your heart away And the light was creeping Down, down, down While we were sleeping But suddenly we hit the ground So come on, let's go, let's run away If that's all there is Oh, to steal your heart away Steal your heart away Steal your heart away The light was creeping Down, down, down While we were sleeping But suddenly we hit the ground So come on, let's go, let's run away If that's all that there is Oh, to steal your heart away Oh, to steal your heart away Alone we suffer To steal your heart away Oh, to steal your heart away Alone we suffer To steal your heart away Suffer... Alone we suffer To steal your heart away Suffer.... Alone we suffer Oh, to steal your heart away Suffer... To steal your heart away Alone we suffer To steal your heart away Suffer... If that's all there is.... Alone we suffer If that's all there is.... To steal your heart away Suffer...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I believe this is a song about all the suffering Lindsey had to do to produce Rumours and then pretty much every album afterwards. It's a lonely road because no one understands what he's going through, and also he's pretty much trapped within the confines of the studio for long periods of time. "The light" he's referring to could be several things - I think the "light" is the happy times, that kept diminishing. They can pretend like everything is fine, but in the end they hit the ground and the you-know-what hit the fan.

However, through their travails, they produced some great music and "stole the hearts" of fans. The phrase "steal your heart away" sounds kind of like the appeal of the songs was partially based on the way the audience emotionally reacted to the combination of vulnerability and fire that pervaded the lyrics along with the more aesthetic qualities of the music.

In a broader sense, this could also be another song about his need to leave FM. Things kept getting worse and worse under the Fleetwood Regime and with Stevie until finally, he felt he couldn't stay anymore, he just had to get away. Even if it meant he could no longer "steal the hearts away" of the audience because as many people wouldn't listen, it didn't matter anymore. He was willing to sacrifice that for his own peace of mind. Luckily, he can have both now, so our hearts can still get stolen (but he always had mine!)

SCOTT speculates:

I think it is a road song...after all, what does an entertainer hope to achieve (other than fiscal success) but to steal hearts of the audience..."all alone we go on" the road is pretty lonely even in a band...so much adoration, ("but the lie was creeping) but only for the night of the show then its back onto the plane for a few hours rest on the way to the next show. Yes a plane, "while we were sleeping, suddenly we hit the ground". Hitting the ground also meshes with "turning it back on" after a short rest...all to steal your heart away.

CAITLYN speculates:

I was thinking about this song and also about why stevie and Lindsey aren't together and it pushes peoples buttons.

When i saw Stevies little explosion incident on all access i thought Well maybe Lindsey just cant deal with this all the time. And he found kristen who is more calm. And even though he loves her. He just doesnt love her as much as he loves Stevie. And Stevie loves him back. So they've been trying to get on with their lives and not stay stuck in the past. And as much as he suffers i think he knows its the right thing to do.

"all alone we suffer to Steal your heart away"

To me that sounded kinda simialr to what was running through my head.
