Down Endless Street

Written by L. Buckingham

Well, you say you'll be fine When you walk out that door Oh, will it be that easy To see me no more? But will you be fine? Are you complete? Say I'll survive Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Oh, well, you say you'll be fine When you walk out that door Oh, will it be so easy To see me no more? Will you survive? Are you complete? Say you'll be fine Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Will you be fine? Are you complete? Say you'll be fine Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street Down endless street...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

This song was released as the B-side of a single from Tango in the Night, right before Lindsey's departure from FM. There are two ways to look at this song: one, as Lindsey asking Stevie (and maybe the rest of the band) if they're so sure they'll do just fine without him. Without him in the band, will they be able to survive? They say yes, but he's not so sure. That's one interpretation.

Another one that I think is a little more likely is that Lindsey is doing a little role-playing here: he is addressing himself, maybe from the perspective of Stevie or others in the band. He's going to leave FM and "walk out that door", but there's uncertainy. Not only are the members of FM wondering if it will be so easy for him to leave, but he's wondering himself if he'll be "complete" away from Stevie and the band, out on his own. Still, he's upbeat: he says he'll "be fine" down the "endless street" of life.
