You and I, Part II

Written by L. Buckingham, C. McVie; Sung by L. Buckingham

I wake up With my eyes shut tight Hoping tomorrow will never come For you and I Oh, the phantoms Crawl out of the night Hoping the daylight will never come For you and I Keep your heart open And your eyes shut tight What will be, will be Keep your heart open And your eyes shut tight But don't forget about me Oh, the phantoms Crawl out of the night Hoping tomorrow will never come For you and I Keep your heart open And your eyes shut tight What will be, will be Keep your heart open And your eyes shut tight But don't forget about me I wake up With my eyes shut tight Hoping tomorrow will never come For you and I Hoping tomorrow will never come For you and I For you and I For you and I For you and I

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

There IS a You and I, Part I - it's very hard to find, released only as a single, but I have an MP3 of it on the aforementioned page if you'd like to listen to it. Here, while Lindsey and Christine both wrote this song and I don't know who wrote what, I am going to analyze the lyrics generally at first, then in light of how Lindsey could relate to them (whether he actually wrote them all or not). I think the part two being referred to here is the second phase of a relationship - the ending. You may wish it would never come, but when it does, no amount of pretending or hoping can deny it. Now I'm going to apply it directly to Lindsey. He's leaving Stevie in that he's going to leave Fleetwood Mac. He wants Stevie to move on, to "keep [her] heart open," but still not to "forget about [him]." By the way, doesn't the peppy sound of this contrast with the mood of the song? An interesting choice.

MICHELLE speculates:

I don't know if anyone will actually read the lyric speculations by song by album and then read mine for this album (well, for 'Isn't It Midnight', 'When I See You Again', and now 'You and I, Part II') which I believe to be intertwined with the discussion of a relationship between Christine McVie and Lindsey. Continuing with that, 'You and I, Part II' (a re-examine of 'You and I, Part I' which is similar, naturally... some of the sounds and riffs are repeated. I urge those interested to check it out).

"I wake up
With my eyes shut tight
Hoping tomorrow will never come
For you and I

"Oh, the phantoms
Crawl out of the night
Hoping the daylight will never come
For you and I

"Keep your heart open
And your eyes shut tight
What will be, will be
Keep your heart open
And your eyes shut tight
But don't forget about me

"I wake up
With my eyes shut tight
Hoping tomorrow will never come
For you and I
Hoping tomorrow will never come
For you and I
For you and I
For you and I
For you and I"

So, we're going with the continued theme of an affair between Christine and Lindsey (please see above and then the previous two songs on this album for my other thoughts on the subject... one can only write the same thing so many times :). So, he wakes up, doesn't want to open his eyes. If he does, he'll have to concede to the morning and their night will be over.

"What will be, will be" is an interesting line. It's as if their relationship just kind of happened, it wasn't planned, it wasn't sought for. Also, "But don't forget about me" has a lot of meaning: to me, it says that Lindsey is concerned that when they go back the affair will be forgotten, passed over as if it never happen. He doesn't want that, it seems. It seems he wants it to be remembered, to last. He doesn't want to wake up, to let go of the night. It was significant to him and he wants it to be for Christine as well ("For you and I... ").
