WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Lindsey didn't leave FM until the late 80's and did two more albums after Tusk, but he pretty much wanted to leave starting from this time. If you've listened to his first two solo albums, you know they have a completely different sound from FM - some songs are very experimental, especially from Go Insane. I think he felt stifled by FM - especially when Tusk didn't match Rumours' success, making the band less willing to listen to his ideas (Tusk was really his baby, as opposed to Mirage, which it seems Lindsey hates). All this is the introduction to what I think this song is about: "that's all" for his time in FM. Getting out "must be just exactly what I need". When he actually does leave, he expresses the same kind of sentiment in Out of the Cradle. The only reason he stayed as long as he did was loyalty to Stevie and loyalty to FM, but it was only a matter of time before he took off - after all, he says it flat out: "I can't stay."
