Monday Morning

Written by L. Buckingham

Monday morning you sure look fine Friday I got travelin' on my mind First you love me, and then you fade away I can't go on believin' this way I got nothing but love for you So tell me what you really want to do First you love me, then you get on down the line But I don't mind I don't mind I'll be there if you want me to No one else that could ever do Got to get some peace in my mind Monday morning you sure look fine Friday I got travellin' on my mind First you love me, and then you say it's wrong You know, I can't go on believing for long But you know it's true, yes You only want me when I get over you First you love me, then you get on down the line But I don't mind No, I don't mind, yeah I'll be there if you want me to No one else that could ever do Got to get some peace in my mind But you know it's true You know, you only want me when I get over you First you love me, then you get on down the line But I don't mind No, I don't mind, yeah I'll be there if you want me to No one else that could ever do Got to get some peace in my mind

Live Version Released on "Live" (1980)

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I like this song - it's very peppy! I think it is also very expressive of the frustration Lindsey felt as the seams were starting to burst on his and Stevie's relationship. They did not break up until the making of Rumours, but the ingredients for their breakup were already stewing. Lindsey talks about how one day Stevie seems fine and loving and the next she seems distant and "get[s] on down the line." Her hot and cold attitude is driving Lindsey so crazy that he's "got travelin'" on his mind. After all, it seems like she is only loving "when [he] get[s] over" her and not when he needs her. He just wants her to make up her mind and "tell me what you really want to do." He's not going to get any "peace in [his] mind" until he's sure. Then, as if he's worried that the answer will be that she doesn't want him anymore, he's suddenly reassuring her, "I don't mind - I'll be there when you want me to - noone else that could ever do." It may be running hot and cold, but it's worth the cold to stay around for the hot parts! As long as they stay together, he can deal with the rest.
