WEBMISTRESS speculates:
This one isn't too hard to figure out: Carol Ann, his girlfriend at the time, had a bad drug habit that was driving Lindsey away. He has tried to convince her to give it up, but apparently its hold is stronger than his influence. It's more important to her to go out and party then spend time with Lindsey, who is left "all alone." He's given it a lot of thought, but he's got to leave - she's hurting but he can't do anything to help and she's dragging him down with her. It's made her oblivious to reality and Lindsey can't deal with it any longer. "And this is why [he] must go." Side note - he says "I must go" 36 times in this song! I guess he really wanted to make his point!
SHARON speculates:
Pretty much a big DITTO to everything the webmistress said! Lindsey wanted out, and even though he spent some time thinking it over, his mind was made up.....I'm getting out!
