Living on Easy

Hawaiian folk song; sung by J. Stewart and N. Reynolds; Guitar: L. Buckingham

I'm a-living on easy With a bottle of whiskey Ain't got no money To see my honey I'm a-living on easy With a bottle of whiskey Ain't got no money To see my honey I go see Maggie She is so porky She got the personality To suit my geniality I go see Maggie She is so porky She got the personality To suit my geniality Good time! Haina 'ia mai ana ka puana la Lawe ana la shua la e ana la Aloha 'ole 'oe ia'u Haina 'ia mai ana ka puana la Lawe ana la shua la e ana la Aloha 'ole 'oe ia'u

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

This song sounds like two middle-aged white guys trying to sing at a Hawaiian luau (the language of the last part). It's hilariously bad. Even Lindsey couldn't make this debacle tolerable! John Stewart is good, but this one's a stinker.

ERIK speculates:

I only know this as a Hawaiian song (Gabby Pahinui?) but I was happy to find the lyrics.
Da braddah stay talkin pidgin - mebbe das howcum you no can unnerstan him.......

NANCY A. speculates:

I, too, only know this as an Hawaiian song, most notably by Bruddha Iz, who uses alternate lyrics. And there are no credits in the liner notes, but the lyrics of the last verse are written as [WM: I put her transcription in the song above]:

Haina 'ia mai ana ka puana la
Lawe aba la shua la e ana la
Aloha 'ole 'oe ia'u

But this is odd because there is no "s" in Hawaiian, is there?

Anyway, I also thought maybe Gabby might have done it, but I can't find any other versions of it besides Iz's live one from 1993...

I do really think it's from Hawaii from the 30's or 40's, and I DO think that Gabby Pahinui has done it. I have found that it also exists on another Hawaiian CD by the Beamers (Keola & Kapono Beamer).
