Mary Lee Jones

Written by L. Buckingham

Days were lonely; so were the nights She could not tell wrong from right Body broken, worn to the bone The final days of Mary Lee Jones Mary Lee Jones She could not get him out of her mind Too much passion burned her blind Nothing she could call her own The final days of Mary Lee Jones Mary Lee Jones Woah, oh, oh, woah Woah, oh, oh, woah Woah, oh, oh, ho Woah, oh, oh, ho, ho, ho Oh, oh Days were lonely; so were the nights She could not tell wrong from right Nothing she could call her own The final days of Mary Lee Jones Mary Lee Jones Woah, oh, oh, woah Woah, oh, oh, woah Woah, oh, oh, ho Woah, oh, oh, ho, ho, ho Oh, oh

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I think this song is about the end of innocence. That name, "Mary Lee Jones," is an all-American, girl-next-door type of name. What happens when the girl next door becomes a woman only to be left alone? She becomes lonely, not caring what is wrong and what is right, weary, and disillusioned. And that descent into disillusionment is what I believe he's referring to when he speaks of "the final days." "She couldn't get him out of her mind - too much passion burned her blind." This girl has been left behind but she still wants the man who did this to her. The song ends with a repeat of that first verse - a song about killing the dream.
