Don't Look Down

Written by L. Buckingham

Diamonds in the sunset, now your time has come Pretty yellow bird fly away into the sun Don't look down, down Do not look down, down Spread your broken wings and learn how to fly Take the diamonds from the sun Wipe the tear from your eye Don't look down, down Do not look down, down Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh... When the candles burn down worlds turn to stone That's when you've got to fly, fly away home Don't look down, down Do not look down, down Don't look down, down Do not look down, down Don't look down Don't look down Do not look down Get out of town Follow the sound

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

This song is about the fear, sadness and the exultation that comes with starting over - in his case, leaving FM. His "time has come" to get away, to "fly into the sun" (see Doing What I Can). He's been through a lot, but he's got to take these broken wings and learn to fly again....oh, wait, that's Mr. Mister! But it's the same kind of deal here. I think it's worth noting that he has to "wipe a tear" when he goes. A lot of times we picture Lindsey as blowing off FM or only seeing the band as an albatross, but it was a difficult decision and despite the fact that he was determined to do it, leaving FM behind was hard for him.

Editorial note: I love how he almost shouts "Don't look down!!!" The urgency of his voice conjures up a picture - for me, at least - of somebody who's climbing and goes really high, but doesn't realize how far it is to the ground. He's about to look down and you know the minute he does he'll realize just how high up he is and get frightened, lose his balance and fall. So, you have to scream at this guy "Don't look down!!!" He needs to get the message RIGHT AWAY before it's too late! Just thought I'd share my little flight of fancy!
