Say We'll Meet Again

Written by L. Buckingham amd R. Aguirre

Just say we'll meet again When the sunset spell is gone in the wind Please say we'll meet again Everyone sees the tear in the seam But talks about the weather And everyone pays a price for these dreams So why not dream these dreams together? Oh, yes Just say we'll meet again When the sunset spell is gone in the wind Please say we'll meet again That was a dream, that was a time But nothing lasts forever Sooner or later we all must go blind But we can dream these dreams together Oh, yes Just say we'll meet again When the sunset spell is gone in the wind Please say we'll meet again Just say we'll meet again Please say we'll meet again

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I'm not sure whether Lindsey here is talking about someone who has died or someone who is simply out of his life, but whatever the case, it's someone he's going to miss. He just wants to one day meet this person again, after it's all over, after "the sunset spell is gone." The line about "everyone sees the tear in the seam but talks about the weather" is my favorite line in the song. When your life is falling apart due to a loss of some kind, everyone sees it, but no one wants to talk about it - they pretend like it's not happening.

While life has a price, that doesn't mean that one has to live alone and in misery. Why not try to be happy in the short time we have, and be together? Even though "nothing lasts forever", and "sooner or later we all must go blind", for now, we can still "dream...together." In the end, Lindsey comes back to that plea: "Please say we'll meet again." Life may be short and transitory, but that doesn't mean there is no hope: maybe someday we will meet again.

And here's something interesting: the man who cowrote this, Robert Aguirre, used to be in Lindsey's first band Fritz in the sixties, the one that Stevie joined, the one where it all began. At least THOSE two got to meet again! This makes me think this whole song could be applicable to Fritz, which would be wild, considering how long ago all that was. Everybody saw that Stevie and Lindsey were taking off and that Fritz was about to fall apart, but nobody said anything. At that time, they were all young and wanting to be rock stars, all "dreaming" about making it, all those years ago. But then it came to an end, Fritz broke up, Stevie and Lindsey were now Buckingham Nicks and the rest of the guys were just plain old Bob, Brian and Javier, left behind and shafted! Still, a lot of time has passed now. They're getting old, about to go blind any minute (Just kidding)! So they should put away any hard feelings and still dream together, meet once more on good terms (at least Bob and Lindsey have stayed on pretty good terms, although that wasn't the case for EVERY member of Fritz, I have heard!)
