WEBMISTRESS speculates:
Love this movie, and love this song! It is perfect for the movie as the Griswolds trek across the USA, but it works personally for Lindsey, too. He wanted to leave Fleetwood Mac as early as 1980, but remained for various reasons (one named Stevie) for seven or eight more years. So, in light of that, this song can refer to Lindsey's experiences touring across the USA with Stevie and Fleetwood Mac. While the "buttercup days are through", some people want to stay. Lindsey, however, thinks "it's time that we flew." Yet, he knows he's getting a lot of flack for being a "freedom seeking man." I hear his final break in 1987 was U-G-L-Y. In my opinion, this song is an expression of Lindsey's desire to be done with Fleetwood Mac, to finally quit "dancin' across the USA."
