Watch Chain

Written by S. Nicks

Lovely, soft faded jeans A very soft shirt in a light blue Perfect dreams And a watch chain becomes you You're just a watch chain And it becomes you A watch chain
A watch devil

Lovely, soft tired face Touchin' fingers through the kitchen lace I think that I should hold your hand But I'm hurting, darlin' Do you understand? I'm hurting, darling

Be aware of the danger
As you cross the great water
Be careful of strangers
Who are new to your eyes
Beware of the people
Who look not straight at you
The keeper of the time is blind The keeper of the time is blind

Be aware of the danger
As you cross the great water
Be careful of strangers
Who are new to your eyes
Beware of the people
Who look not straight at you
The keeper of the time is blind The keeper of the time is blind Watch devil Keeper of the time
A watch devil
Keeper of the time
He's just a watch chain
Just a watch chain
A watch devil
Keeper of the time Keeper of the time
Keeper of the time

A watch devil Ooh, you're just a watch chain A watch devil Keeper of the time

When I heard the demo version, I immediately thought of Lindsey. However, Stevie has since revealed this is about Mick, who also plays on the studio version of the song. In her audio commentary, Stevie states:

"From the day I met Mick, I was very taken with the way he looked, his style. When you're 6 foot 5, you have to have your jeans made for you. They just don't make them in size 6 foot 5. And so, everything that he had, he pretty much had made for himself. His shirts and his jackets and his vests... it was a whole style and I thought it was great because it was so English. You know how he wears his suits, and his fob watches... his beautiful 24 karat gold fob watches. Lindsey and I are American kids, California kids - we didn't know anything about style. We were hippie kids. Mick was Mr. Style. So, when he came into our lives, everybody had to up our style a little bit. The watch chain really started out just really as a metaphor to Mick, and about just that whole English thing with the little tiny slightly padded shoulders and very nipped in waist... and it was a good look, and it was a good look for women, too. All the girls in my life, we all thought, 'We wanna look like Mick, for sure!' So, we all tried to get the same kind of jeans and little vests and silk shirts... And actually Mick just has to this day a real love for beautiful clothes and beautifl things. So, that all rubbed off on everybody in my life. The song itself is just kind of another little bit of our relationship that went by in a flurry and left us with some great memories. We will always be there for each other, and that's just a really great thing that really true friends can get through anything and come out the other side and survive it and still be really close."

Mick is the Watch Devil. He wears that watch chain on the Rumours cover and the drummer literally keeps time for the band. Stevie and Mick had their affair when she was very vulnerable and "hurting"; though it certainly was a sincere love, it was one constructed from the ruins of other relationships with cocaine mixed into the mortar. It would also have killed the band if discovered. She was "aware of the danger" and the need to keep it secret, especially from Lindsey, in order to prevent that. They couldn't trust anyone, and the prying eyes of strangers were always around. Finally, Stevie had to end it, despite the fact that this song shows how fond she was of him. It was just too difficult to keep the secret and too risky to continue.

Side note: it's a shame this is a bonus track and not on the standard CD. I love it!
