Separate Lives

Written: Bishop; Sung: P. Collins & M. Martin; Backup Vocals: S. Nicks

[Phil in purple; Marilyn in green; Together in blue]

You called me from the room in your hotel Off a romance from someone that you'd met And telling me how sorry you were Leaving so soon And that you miss me sometimes When you're alone in your room Do I feel lonely, too? You have no right To ask me how I feel You have no right To speak to me so kind I can't go on Just holding onto ties Now that we're living (living) Separate lives Well, I held on To let you go And if you lost your love for me Well, you never let it show There was no way To compromise So now we're living (living) Separate lives Ooh, it's so typical Love leads to isolation So you build that wall (Build that wall) Yes, you build that wall (Build that wall) And you make it stronger Well, you have no right To ask me how I feel You have no right To speak to me so kind Some day I might (I might) Find myself looking in your eyes But for now, we'll go on living separate lives Yes, for now we'll go on living separate lives Ah (Ah...) Ah, separate lives

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Stevie probably got involved with this through Marilyn Martin, who she worked with on the Streets of Fire soundtrack at around the same time. I've listened very carefully, and I think that's her echoing on "compromise," but I can't pick her out anywhere else. The "aah"'s at the end might be her as well. At any rate, she apparently still sang backup on this song, regardless if it was just one or two phrases. By the way, this is one of my favorite Phil Collins songs (right up there with "Against All Odds," "Take Me Home," "In the Air Tonight"....OK, I just love Phil Collins)!
