WEBMISTRESS speculates:
This song is rather vague, but I think it's about feeling like your life is coming down around you - like you're in danger of being consumed by a "huge fire", but it's not as bad as all that. Your soul is just in pain, but you'll get through it. You can cry, but then you have to "stop" and do something about it. She's upset, but she understands the position of the one who hurt her (Lindsey leaving FM?) and "withdraws [her] decision" against him (maybe she regrets all those harsh words Mick says she spewed at him when Lindsey made the break.) She has to continue on, to keep "taking it to the limit." Still, she hurts, although she pretends not to - she fools everyone. She has to overcome it and escape that feeling of the world ending - jump out of that window and get away from that destructive feeling.
ERICA speculates:
When I first heard this song, I didn't particularly like it, but one day in school, I had my CD player out and I decided to listen to it again. The line "So cry for me, take a little time, then stop" really caught my attention. By the end of the day, I had the song memorized. I think this song is about someonen who's life is changing dramatically, and they have to choose what's the most important. That's why Stevie says "What could she take and still survive the fire?" Then she says there is a way out, "But then again, there was a window" and maybe the fire is just an illusion, a reason for you to self destruct. When she says "So cry for me, take a little time, and then stop. It's just something that you cannot see, so stop" this is telling people not to feel sorry for her. Just shed the neccesary tears, then leave her alone. It's not their problem, and they cannot see the real situation, so just stop! I really like the part where she says "I understand your position. I withdraw my decision. I've got no more information for you" this means that she understands what this person is going through, and that she withdraws her choice against this person, and that she will not judge them, but she doesn't have to be friends with them (AKA: LINDSEY.)
