Sleeping Angel

Written by S. Nicks

Take me if you need me But never hold me down You're asking me to trust you Well, there's little of that around I'm trying to believe you And I'm learning all the time Two-part personality The flower and the vine The flower and the vine Take me, sleeping angel Catch me when you can Real love affairs are heavy spells For a woman and a man For a woman and a man I need you because you let me breathe Well, you've taken me away But never take me lightly Or I could never stay No, I could never stay Well, someday when we're older And my hair is silver gray Unbraid with all of the love that you have Like a soft, silver chain Like a soft, silver chain Woah, someday when we're older And my hair is silver gray Unbraid with all of the love that you have Like a soft, silver chain Well, like a soft, silver chain Woah, take me, sleeping angel Oh, catch me when you can And unbraid with all of the love that you have Like a soft, silver chain

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Oh, how I love this song! My favorite of Stevie's solo work. It might recall Lindsey through its use of the word "angel", the pet name Stevie and Lindsey used to call each other (see Angel). Still, specific references are hard to come by - this just seems to be a song about love in general, love that is not too confining, but that has trust, and can deal with the good and the bad - "the flower and the vine." She needs him, but he can't take her for granted, or she'll leave.

However, it doesn't look like she plans to leave anytime soon, as she finishes with a portrait of their life in the future: lovingly unbraiding her then-silver hair like a soft chain, the chain that keeps them together. Such a beautiful image!
