Annabel Lee

Written by Edgar Allan Poe, Additional Lyrics by S. Nicks

It was many and many a year ago In a kingdom by the sea That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me She was a child and I was a child In this kingdom by the sea But we loved with a love that was more than love I and my Annabel Lee With a love that the winged angels of Heaven They coveted her and me And the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams And the sun never shines, but I see the bright eyes I lie down by the side The angels, not half so happy in Heaven Went envying her and me Yes! That was the reason (as all men know In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud that night Killing my, my Annabel Lee But our love was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we Of many far wiser than we And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee And the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams And the sun never shines, but I see the bright eyes I lie down by the side And the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee And the stars never rise, but I see the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee So all the night-tide I lie down by the side Of my beautiful Annabel Lee I lie down by the side Of my darling - my life, my life and my bride I lie down by the side Of my life, my life, my life I lie down by the side Of my darling - my life, my life and my bride I lie down I lie down by the side I lie down I lie down...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

This song is really just a musical version of Edgar Allan Poe's famous and beautiful poem "Annabel Lee." Stevie rearranges it just a bit, adds in a phrase, takes out a couple, but it's surprisingly faithful to the original. Why did Stevie do this? Well, as I said before, it's a beautiful poem - perhaps she thought so, too. And she loved Robin as her very best friend, who was taken away from her - and their love, though not\ romantic, was also very strong. The chorus - about the moon and the stars reminding one of the lost loved one and her bright eyes - might be the way Stevie misses Robin.

RUISRYAN speculates:

I agree with WebMistress completely. When I first heard this, I thought "Oh thats nice, Stevie likes Poe, so she'll do a little tribute." But then I thought, well why this particular piece, there are many more that I think would fit a more broad look of Stevie's life and loves. However then I realized that she and Robin had been friends since they were kids, and knew every part of each other, and might even have enjoyed the poetry of Poe together. I really think this song reflects how Stevie will miss and lament for Robin all the days she lives; and that their close bond can never be replaced no matter how many nights she lies by the side of her dear Anabel Lee.
