At the Fair

Written by S. Nicks

She remembers a time When there was something inside them And they did not hide it No, it wasn't that they're weren't in love But everything that they loved They found at the fair Since everything that he loved He found at the fair Ooh, and the doll that he wanted Well, he should have left her there Since everything that he loved He found at the fair And the beautiful doll that he wanted Well, he should have left her there Home became a glass cage to her She remembers a time There was no music, no freedom No friends of mine Well, it wasn't that they weren't in love It wasn't that he did not care It's just everything that he loved He found it at the fair Well, everything that he loved He found at the fair Ooh, and the doll that he wanted Well, he should have left her there Since everything that he loved He found it at the fair And the beautiful doll that he wanted Well, he should have left her there In the beginning She remembers a time When there was something inside them And they didn't hide it It wasn't that they weren't in love It's just that they forgot Because everything that he loved He found at the fair Well, everything that he loved He found at the fair Ooh, and the doll that he wanted Well, he should have left her there Since everything that he loved...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I think the "fair" here is the crazy world of fame. "There was a time," before all this, when she and Lindsey were just struggling musicians... but together. Then, they joined Fleetwood Mac, started becoming famous... and it all started to fall apart. Their love was being replaced by the heady effects of success. I think the "beautiful doll" comment has to do with something that Stevie said in an interview - she said that it was hard for her to be supportive of Lindsey in the group because, if he were doing something that she felt was jeopardizing the group, she couldn't encourage him in it. So here, she might be referring to the fact that Lindsey expected her to just be quiet and go along with whatever he wanted to do, even if it went against her better judgment or her own concerns about the direction of Fleetwood Mac. So, "it wasn't that they weren't in love," but things like that got between them, and it ended. The price of fame.
