Love Don't Fail Me Now

Written by S. Nicks

Matter of the heart, what the heart has to say Burns the dark, and the mind will have its way Well, you know that the heart will come Like a long-lost friend And you feel it with every beat But you won't give in What's the matter with a heart When it's frozen inside? You can't imagine how to start You have to swallow your pride It comes down to a single word That you just can't find But the minute that you let it out You can leave it all behind Well, love, don't fail me now, don't let me go End this emptiness, melt all the snow Lonely as I am, such a stubborn man Love, don't fail me now And if you're looking for the light You can turn from the pain If you don't get it right You can try it again It's a matter of the heart Or the heart of the mind Love, please save me Don't let me be blind Try, you can try again Somebody save me from myself I can't go on this way At the end of the longest road Is an endless prayer Like a voice in the wilderness Crying, "Is there anybody.... There must be somebody there!" Lonely as I am, such a stubborn man Love, don't fail me now Love, don't fail me now End this emptiness, melt all the snow Lonely as I am, such a stubborn man Love, don't fail me now Love, don't fail me now Love, don't fail me now Love, don't fail me now Don't let me go... Love, don't fail me now Don't let me go Love, don't fail me now Don't let me go...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I believe this song is about the inner struggle to overcome the fear of giving oneself over to love. In the first verse, she talks about someone who is trying to ignore "what the heart has to say" - someone who won't give in. She says that people who don't allow themselves to love are "frozen inside." A person like that needs to give up his pride in order to become free of misery, to get rid of the "emptiness" and the "snow" of his frozen heart.

In the line "Lonely as I am, such a stubborn man," I believe she is saying that the man she loves is so proud and stubborn he refuses to give into love and leaves her lonely. She hopes love has the power to overcome his pride - so she asks love not to "fail." She believes it will be his salvation from his "pain" - he shouldn't be afraid - even if he messes up he can try again....otherwise all there is is loneliness. He needs to be saved from himself. And, OK, I have to say it, I think she's talking about Lindsey! (But really, when DON'T I think that?)
