Prettiest Girl in the World

Written by S. Nicks

Maybe... About a girl that he had known when he was young So he started the story About a girl that he had known when he was young She was the prettiest girl in the world That was a long time ago She was just like you Oh, no, you say, "Yes, she looked just like you" Someday you'll understand it all Maybe I was wrong...maybe he was right Talk about painful He says, "You don't know what pain is" Maybe you were wrong Bold as you are, walking Prettiest girl in the world No emotion - held in tight Nothing was said It was hard to combat Nothing was said And the story ended tragically So he ended the story About the girl he met when he was young She was the prettiest girl in the world That was a long time ago She looked just like you Well, someday you'll understand it all Maybe I was wrong...maybe she was right Talk about painful "You don't know what pain is, baby Don't talk to me about it You don't know what pain is" Maybe you were wrong... Just as you are, walking, walking The prettiest girl in the world Prettiest girl in the world The prettiest girl in the world The story says That was a long time ago She looked just like you Someday you'll understand it all Prettiest girl in the world Prettiest girl in the world Prettiest girl in the world Maybe I was wrong...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

This is another sad song Stevie chose not to release. "The story about the girl that he had known when he was young" is the story of Lindsey and Stevie, I believe. They met when they were teenagers, both in high school, and got involved romantically about the time Lindsey became 'legal' as we would say today! Back then, he considered her "the prettiest girl in the world," but "that was a long time ago." Things have changed between them; "the story ended tragically." She's not so pretty to him anymore because she's hurt him too much. She may look just like the girl he fell in love with, but too much has happened for him to still have that perfect view of her - her beauty has been tarnished for him because of all the pain.

That's when he tells her "You don't know what pain is" - he hears her talking about, singing about how hard their breakup was on her, but he thinks she's full of it, basically. SHE left HIM. He's the one that's really hurting. After all, if it was so 'painful' for her to leave him, she could have always come back. But she didn't... she wanted to "go her own way," so he says "Don't talk to me about it." She made her choice. Here she seems unsure whether it was the right one. But "someday you'll understand it all." Wishful thinking? By the way, the fact that Stevie presents Lindsey sympathetically here and casts herself in an ambivalent light is very interesting and, I think, gives the song a depth that exceeds your usual blame-game songs. Again, however, it never made it out of the demo bin. A shame.
