WEBMISTRESS speculates:
Regarding this song, Stevie writes in the liner notes of TimeSpace: "There was a time when I was falling out of one love and into another, when nothing else seemed to matter except this person. I adored him..." So, apparently this person is the focus of this song. The thing about this song is that the love doesn't seem to be requited - unusual for Stevie! The voice she hears is with another voice in another room, behind closed doors away from Stevie. He's away from her, but she still loves him - unfortunately, he tells her, "if anyone falls in love, it will be ONE of us" - not a good sign, since it takes two to tango. Apparently she is one of the women he is going to "run away" from.
She doesn't know what to say, but she can't help loving him - she's "never seen anything like" him. She has to learn to accept the fact that he'll never be with her, that the closest she will get to him is watching his "shadow against the wall" as he goes about his business in the "room next to" Stevie's. The only love they will share will be in "dreamtime" in "the back of" the mind. Poor Stevie!
MARK speculates:
This isn't what I think the song is about, but ever since I saw the movie "Repulsion," this song always makes me think of that movie! And that is not a good thing, as it is a horrible movie about a woman who thinks a man is coming through the walls to sexually molest her. The movie is as bizarre as it sounds.
ANDRE speculates:
Stevie has already gone on record to say this song is about her relationship to Glenn Parish. Their relationship is such a mystery. He was in the background alot during WILD HEART. He was also on the road with her during Tango Tour & Behind The Mask Tour. You see him in the backstage footage alot....escorting her on & offstage...also in the tour program photos. She dedicated the song to Glenn on the liner notes of The Wild Heart Album. They had some kind of weird falling out in the early 90's and he disappeared. I saw him selling her stuff on EBAY in 2000 and I emailed him..he responded. He was selling her framed platinum and gold record albums which was odd. When I asked him if he still spoke to Stevie and how he got that personal stuff...he would not respond and stopped emailing me. They definitely do not speak anymore. I think he was a user and a hanger-on. I think they may have had an affair at some point.... it is a mystery.Glenn wanted to be a songwriter and never really made it.
