Gold

Written & Sung: J. Stewart; Backup: S. Nicks; Guitar: L. Buckingham

When the lights go down In the California town People are in for the evening I jump into my car And I throw in my guitar My heart beatin' time with the breathing Driving over Kanan Singing to my soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold My buddy Jim Bash He is working pumping gas And he makes two fifty for an hour He's got rhythm in his hands As he's tapping on the cans Sings rock and roll in the shower Driving over Kanan Singing to his soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold California girls are the prettiest in the world Each one a song in the making Singin' rhymes with me, I can hear the melody Story is there for the taking Driving over Kanan Singing to my soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold Driving over Kanan Singing to my soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold When the lights go down In the California town People are in for the evening I jump into my car And I throw in my guitar My heart beatin' time with the breathing Driving over Kanan Singing to my soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold Driving over Kanan Singing to my soul 'Cause people out there turn the music into gold People out there turn the music into gold People out there turn the music into gold People out there turn the music into gold, gold People out there turn the music into gold, gold People out there turn the music into gold, gold People out there turn the music into gold, gold Workin' on the radio People out there turn the music into gold, gold Slippin' out the back door People out there turn the music into gold, gold People out there turn the music into gold, gold...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I've always liked this song - ever since I heard it on my older sister's "70's Gold" LP - but I never realized who was singing backup before Enchanted came out! (There actually was a time when I didn't know every single piece of music Stevie and/or Lindsey appeared on... but then again before 1997 I didn't know any more than Lindsey Buckingham sang Holiday Road and Stevie Nicks sang Talk to Me! In a band called Fleetwood Mac? What's that?).

Now, for some analysis - John Stewart wrote this about Lindsey, or at least Lindsey inspired the sentiment. It's not too hard to see why - Lindsey made megabucks off of his music. He's the richest member of Fleetwood Mac simply because he not only gets paid for his performances and from royalties off of his music, but for his production of the music as well. Stevie's said several times (with just the faintest trace of envy!) that "the producers get paid first." It pays to be multi-talented, especially when one of those talents is a genius for production! The money was well-earned and well-taken care of and now Lindsey is set for life (provided he doesn't suddenly become addicted to gambling or something!) So, indeed, he made his music into a veritable Fort Knox of gold.
