Oh, no, here I go again Fallin' in love again Love is like a grain of sand Slowly slippin' through your hand Oh, oh, whoa... Woah, oh, Diane Woah, oh, Diane Will I love you, I will, always Will you stand by me always? 'Cause love is like a grain of sand Slowly slippin' through your hand Woah, woah, whoa Woah, oh, Diane Woah, oh, Diane Talkin' 'bout Diane Woah, oh, Diane Woah, oh, Diane Woah, oh, Diane Talkin' 'bout Diane Woah, oh, Diane
WEBMISTRESS speculates:
This is rather simplistic lyrically so it's not much of a challenge. Lindsey is "talkin' 'bout Diane". Who's she? Wasn't he with Carol then? Maybe Diane's Richard's girlfriend (Richard Dashut is the other writer of the song)? Then again, I guess Lindsey doesn't have to be absolutely faithful to real life ALL the time....maybe "Diane" just sounded better, like "Lola".
At any rate, let's go into the realm of the hypothetical and for the sake of argument pretend Diane is the writer's girlfriend. He says he'll love her, "always." But then - why the "love is like a grain of sand, slowly slipping through your hand"? Apparently, Diane should be worried - it doesn't sound like it's expected to last! Even hypothetically, Lindsey just doesn't do honest-to-goodness love songs, even when he's cowriting! By the way, I just think this song is so fun with it old-fashioned "Woah-oh!" Definitely his best on Mirage, in my humble opinion (not shared by many, including Lindsey!)
