Go on, save yourself Leave the key here You love someone else I shouldn't be here Don't ask me why You know the answer If she's so willing, little one There was no chance there I have come to know This world of changing faces I can't fight the world I can't change it So be true to me My walls are flamin' If she's so willing, little one I won't be staying Ahh Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh I should have... Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can I am older now But I still remember I took the greatest fall I can't accept her So be true to me My walls are flamin' If she's so willing, little one I won't be staying Ahh Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh I should have... Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh Turned away and ran I should have... I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh I should have... Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh Fast as I can I should have... Just as fast as I can What you did not need Was a woman who was stronger You needed someone to depend on you I could not be her I did not want to My first mistake was to smile at you Smile at you Go on, save yourself Leave the key here You love someone else I shouldn't be here Don't ask me why You know the answer If she's so willing, little one There was no chance there Ahh Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh I should have... Turned away and ran I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can Just as fast as I can Ahh Turned away and ran I should have... I should have turned away and ran Ahh As fast as I can I should have, I should have... Just as fast as I can Go on, save yourself Leave the key here You love someone else I shouldn't be here Go on, save yourself Go on, save yourself I shouldn't be here I shouldn't be here Shouldn't be here...

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I believe one of the main problems in Lindsey and Stevie's relationship was the power dynamic, and in here, she spells it out. Lindsey want a "little woman", one who lives for him, who depends on him. A woman who makes him feel big and strong, someone non-threatening. That's not Stevie, she's her own woman, she's independent, she's "a woman who was stronger." She mocks the type of woman she believes Lindsey does have, a weak "willing little one" with no personality of her own. This was written while Lindsey was with Carol Ann Harris - maybe Stevie was contemptous of Carol Ann and what she saw as Carol's "anything you say, honey" attitude. Anyway, she's so hurt by this incident that she wishes she had never gotten involved with him, never even "smile[d] at" him. Now, she's getting out of there!

SHANNON speculates:

I think that Smile at you is Stevie's message to the lovers she had that where still married and for what ever reason refuesed to leave their wives even after telling her that they would. Stevie finally had enough of being the other woman. She also was not willing to be totaly subserviant or dependent on the man which probably didn't help the relationship.

FAB speculates:

I completely agree with you: she was talking about Lindsey's friend and she was stronger than he was. Apart from this it's one of the songs I like the best, so full of energy and with that wonderful choir of Ahhhs and AAAAAhhhhhs....

SHANNON #2 speculates:

In Stevie’s songs Everybody Finds Out, Destiny Rules, and Smile At You, the speaker is someone in a love affair with someone that is either married or involved with someone else. Example: “When love starts out in the darkness it doesn’t do well in the light. Affairs of the heart that start out in the dark usually stay with the night.” EFO “You love someone else I shouldn’t be here…. You love someone else I shouldn’t be here.” SAY, “I knew that this would be the only time that we could be alone and foolish.” DR

Could these have been written or begun during the Rumours/Tusk era when Stevie had her brief relationship with Mick? How well do we really know Stevie? If she had a relationship with one married man could there have been others? I think she has said that writing is therapeutic and she wants to share her mistakes with others so they won’t make the same mistakes. How many affairs are in the gypsy’s closet?

BRITTANY speculates:

I remember reading a little note on the "Reconsider Me" promo CD on it about how the song was a favor to Jimmy Iovine, in the note she called him "little one." Is Jimmy the same "little one" she is referring to in this song??

CDWEST speculates:

In the new cd Say You Will, there is a song "Smile at You." Stevie says "What you did not need was a woman who was stronger, you needed someone who depend on you." Stevie and Lindsey will always love each other.
