Walk a Thin Line

Written by L. Buckingham

I've seen so many things that made me wonder But sometimes it's hard to tell I said "Take your time" But no one was listening I walk a thin line They told me that I never would recover Still some say they knew me well I said "Stay by my side" But no one said nothin' I walk a thin line And I said "Please take your time" But no one said nothin' I walk a thin line I said "Fate takes time" But no one was listening I walk a thin line

Demo version appears on the Tusk Reissue (2004)

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

I think this song, like That's All for Everyone, expresses Lindsey's frustrations with FM. He wanted to try a lot of new things with Tusk, and they let him do so, but probably not to the extent that he wanted, and he probably took a lot of flack for it as well. He keeps pleading that they just need a little patience and everything will work out - but "no one was listening." He is being pushed to the brink - he has to "walk a thin line" to keep it all together. And this is the beginning of the end for Lindsey in FM - it's all about those famed "creative differences" that always seem to break up even the best of bands. Editorial note: this song's hook (I think that's the musical term) is so catchy I'll start humming it out of nowhere. "I walk a thin...line!" Not to mention that now I can't hear that phrase without this song popping into my head.
