What Makes You Think You're the One?

 Written by L. Buckingham

What makes you think you're the one Who can laugh without cryin'? What makes you thing you're the one Who can live without dyin'? Every little bit Is there To see Every little bit Of you And me What makes you think I'm the one Who'll be there when you're callin'? What makes you think I'm the one Who will catch you when you're fallin'? Every litle bit Is there To see Every little bit Of you And me What makes you think I'm the one Who will love you forever? Everything you do has been done And it won't last forever And every little bit Is there To see And every little bit Of you And me

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Here Lindsey basically tells Stevie "you're not all that". He thinks she feels like she can have her cake and eat it, too - "laugh without cryin'... live without dyin'", leave Lindsey and still have him love her. Well, he's telling her she has another think coming. Like he says in Eyes of the World, their relationship has played out in front of everyone, and now it's Lindsey's turn to show everyone how things are now.

The song spells out his anger as he tells her that he's not going to be kept on a string, her back-up lover when she's lonely or depressed. He's not going to keep pouring his love out and getting nothing in return but crumbs. There was a time he tolerated that, but that - and his love - "won't last forever" - there's only so much a man can take! She might like him to pine after her, be a romantic "tragic figure," always holding a torch for his beautiful angel Stevie whom he can't live without.

Well, his answer to that is what makes her think she's the one who is so wonderful Lindsey can't get over her? "Just watch me!" says Lindsey.
