WEBMISTRESS speculates:
I think that in this song, Stevie's appealing to Lindsey to reconsider and stay in FM. She wants him to change his mind - to "think for a moment." Once he leaves, they'll probably never see each other again. She wonders if they stayed together, would it all be different? Would things get better? Stevie thinks Lindsey should consider that possibility. He shouldn't do anything rash because he's unhappy or angry at the moment. She's asking him to "change his mind at the very last minute" and stay. She tells him that leaving could be "a whole lotta trouble" for him... it might be harder than he thinks, totally separating himself emotionally from her. I don't think she's referring to him having trouble making it financially - she's always thought he was a genius. I think she's talking about making it in other ways - as I said before, emotionally.
When she talks about "the angel" I think she is referring to Lindsey again - that was their pet name for each other (see Angel and Ooh My Love, for instance). They had a dream, "and the dream came true", but it also ended when it "followed through" and they broke up. She wanted success, and she got it! But she wants him, too. She's so confused about him - the push and pull Lindsey refers to in Goodbye Angel. She tells him he'd "better go" if he hates being in a band so much that he complains all the time.... but when he agrees, she tells him to give FM another chance and "stop for a minute!"
She wants him to "have mercy" and rethink his decision - but he tells her she's living in a dream world if she thinks all their problems are going to magically disappear if he stays. He might also be talking about the "dream world" Stevie lives in where she thinks that because they're still in the band together, they're still connected. He doesn't think much of that notion, although, again, Stevie has said she didn't consider them really broken up until he left the band. (Lindsey's response to that was "That's.... interesting.") So, she wants to keep them connected but she never wanted to actually get back together with him. He thinks that by doing so she keeps herself an emotional "prisoner" to a love that is not going to reignite (although she secretly harbored the hope that one day they would reunite. Bizarre, since she was the one who left him).
Therefore, they can't be friends, they can't be lovers, they don't know what they are to each other. (The same exact lines - "You're not my friend/You're not my love/ And this is something that we really don't discuss" are found in Thousand Days, referring to Prince in that instance.) His sadness grieves her, but even if he leaves, she'll just have to "get through it." She just doesn't want him to take that final step and cut all ties forever.
