Blue Denim

Written by S. Nicks and M. Campbell
I saw him the other day I saw him again yesterday I wonder if I'll ever see him again He reminded me of blue denim Blue-gray eyes, they change with the color Change with the sun, they run with the sight Change with the wind, but they're always bright Bright eyes...blue denim Bright eyes...blue denim I knew him another way I knew him another day In some ways he'd forgotten me In many ways he got to me I turned away so he couldn't see I turned away, it could never be I never thought he would walk away But I lost him again yesterday Blue-gray eyes, they change with the color Change with the sun, they run with the sight Change with the wind, but they're always bright Bright eyes...blue denim Bright eyes...blue denim Understanding me...understanding you Is not an easy thing to do Understanding me and understanding you Is not an easy thing to do And I will never forget The last time I saw you Like a photograph, so rare Ooh, like a painting No, I will never forget The last time I saw you Never to be...not you...not me, no, no Blue-gray eyes, they change with the color Change with the sun, they run with the sight Change with the wind, but they're always bright Bright eyes...blue denim Bright eyes...blue denim So I'm going away for a little while To remember how to feel And if I find the answer I promise you, I'll come back and get you Well, yes, I'm going away for a little while To remember how to feel And if I find the answer I promise you, I'll come back and get you Well, if I find the answer I promise you, I'll come back and get you I'll come back and get you I'll come back and get you

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Stevie wrote this song after FM played together at Bill Clinton's Inauguration. Lindsey had been reluctant to participate, since he had left FM on such bad terms with everyone. Stevie had called him up and begged, cajoled, and threatened him until he finally agreed. When they performed, it was great, but afterwards nothing had changed. Lindsey still was upset with the rest of the band and they probably gave him a hard time as well. As Stevie watched him go, still so distant, she no doubt wondered if all he had left for her were bad feelings. So she "saw him again" at this point, and she still found him attractive - he "reminded her of blue denim" with those "blue-gray eyes" that she had always loved so much (see When I See You Again and No Questions Asked, for instance). At the same time, she probably felt very unattractive as at this point in her life Stevie had gained weight and was very unhappy.

In the song, she remembers how it used to be when she "knew" him like nobody else, but it seems like he's all but "forgotten" her. Unfortunately, she hasn't forgotten - he still "got" to her. She has to "turn away" to hide how affected she is, because he's obviously not feeling the same way. She realizes "it could never be" and doesn't want him to realize how much she's hurting. She always thought he would be there for her, but she "lost him again" as he headed home after the ceremony without any attempt at reconciliation.

She knows that "understanding" the complicated feelings they had for each other "is not an easy thing to do" - after all, she left him, and now she wants him back, all these years later? All she can do now is hold the memory of the "last time" she saw him, mourning the fact that she will never have him, never fulfill that dream that she had always nurtured of them somehow finding their way back to each other. She has to get away to deal with all those feelings, but there is one positive note at the end: "If I find the answer, I promise you, I'll come back and get you." If there's some way this can still work out, Stevie promises, she will find it.
