Destiny

Written by S. Nicks

Crying in the morning, trying to be strong Waiting for the spring to turn into the fall Love don't mean what it says at all My destiny says that I'm destined to fall My destiny is riding again Rolling in the rain, unwinding in the wind My destiny is fighting again Secretly unwinding What it was that I was supposed to say To say to you today Well, it wasn't like the others, it was nothing at all It wasn't like anything, it was easy to fall Love don't mean what it says at all My destiny says that I'm destined for it all My destiny is riding again Rolling in the rain, unwinding in the wind My destiny is fighting again Secretly unwinding What it was that I was supposed to say To say to you today Crying... Still crying in the morning, trying to be strong Waiting for the spring to turn into the fall Love never meant what it said at all My destiny proved I was destined to fall My destiny is riding again Rolling in the rain, unwinding in the wind My destiny is fighting again Secretly unwinding What it was that I was supposed to say To say to you today I am crying... I am trying to be strong Heartbroken...unspoken You were nothing like the others You were nothing like the others Heartbroken...unspoken... All gone...nothing left at all Heartbroken...unspoken... I am trying to be strong I am trying to be stong Nothing, nothing changed at all...

The first few lines from this song are identical to the those of the song Enchanted, a song Stevie wrote even before she joined FM, though it was not released until she put it on The Wild Heart. That song is much more upbeat than this one, which has a wistful, almost mournful tune. She's sad and depressed over her disappointments in love, but she knows she's "destined to fall" anyway. And that destiny gets her in trouble, as she continues to try again for love. She remembers her former love: with him, it "wasn't like the others...it was easy to fall." While it didn't work out, she still knows she's "destined for it all" someday. Until then, she's "still crying in the morning, trying to be strong," waiting for her time to come, even as she gets older. And the longer it takes, the more she is "heartbroken."

ANDRE speculates:

When I saw the Street Angel Tour....Stevie told the audience she had written Destiny before she and Lindsey joined FM. Stevie said this song was about her relationship with Lindsey and about the doubts that began to set in after the last Buckingham/Nicks show in San Francisco and losing their recording contract with Polydor. Could they pull it together and transcend their situation? Stevie said they was a "magic in the air" when they came back to Los Angeles and they buried themselves in their writing...and it paid off when they hung in and got the call to be in FM! Stevie also wrote Sorcerer then...I picture the two of them in blue denim writing on the floor...no furniture...burning candles..the mad songwriters in all that
"Black Ink Darkness".....
