Say You Will

Something in you brought out something in me That I've never been since That part of me that was only for you That kind of romance Comes only once, that kind of love That kind of fever dance That you love because you've become someone else In an instant Say you will, say you will give me one more chance At least give me time to change your mind That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance Something in you put a hold on my heart It's hard to believe now Here is a place that will never be dark I remember that place That kind of touch, electricity of love That certain kind of grace That you love because you become someone else In an instant Say you will, say you will give me one more chance At least give me time to change your mind That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance Say you will, say you will give me one more chance (Say you will) At least give me time to change your mind (Say you will) That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance Say you will, say you will give me one more chance (Say you will) At least give me time to change your mind (Say you will) That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance Say you will, say you will give me one more chance At least give me time to change your mind That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance Say you will, say you will give me one more chance At least give me time to change your mind That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance [Children's voices] Say you will, say you will give me one more chance At least give me time to change your mind That always seems to heal the wounds If I can get you to dance

WEBMISTRESS speculates:

Stevie says this is about Christine and her appeal to Chris to "say you will" remain with FM (reminiscent of Think About It). The "romance" is more of an attitude than a love affair (obviously); working with Chris brought out a different side of Stevie and performing as Fleetwood Mac allowed Stevie to "become someone else" in a way she couldn't have done alone. It's a special, one-of-a-kind dynamic. The chorus is pretty self-explanatory: This was written around when Chris was wanting to bring a halt to the Dance tour. Therefore, Stevie was very literally trying to get Chris to change her mind about the Dance! We all know how "healing" they all were saying The Dance was; Stevie thinks continuing to stay together as a group may smooth over any other issues.

The rest of the song runs along the same motif: appreciation for the special things Chris brings to the group and to Stevie, a wish for it to continue. For some reason, the song ends with child-like voices, whether real or manipulated I'm not sure. I'm not quite sure what to make of that, but it sounds nice.

Side note: I wonder what went down with Christine? Something tells me there is a LOT more to that story than we've heard. I guess we have to wait until Mick runs out of money so he'll write another book - this time about how Chris and Stevie got into a wild catfight that caused Chris to run screaming for the airport and the fastest plane to England...

RUISRYAN speculates:

I agree with WebMistress completely. The first time I heard this I immediately thought, 'Think About It'. I think here shes trying to appeal to Chris, to forget the past and enjoy the present incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. I also think she's appealing to the whole band, 'If I can get you to dance' is Stevies famous line from 'Sweet Girl'... 'I chose to dance across the stages of the world'.

I also think along the same lines about the idea that perhaps there is more happening between Chris and the other members of FM. Perhaps she is just leary to rejoin because of all the drama that has happened in the past... who can say? At least until they make the next Documentary or Storytellers...

WWDOVE1 specuates:

I heard that the children singing at the end are: Stevie's niece, John McVie's daughter and one other child!!! (info from radio interview of Lindsey Buckingham from lindseybuckingham.com)

NICOLA RHIANNON speculates:

I always believed that 'Say You Will' is directed at Lindsey (I usually think this, though, I'm a romantic at heart!). I believe that the reference to "if I can get you to dance" is alluding to the possible affair between Stevie and Lindsay during 'The Dance' tour. I think in some way she was thinking that the reunion tour would lead to another possible reconcilliation, and was asking Lindsay to consider that chance, by reminding him of a past memory. Only a thought.

ANDRE speculates:

Sorry to burst some bubbles. Say You Will was one of "4 new songs" that Stevie wrote after the Trouble In Shangri-la Tour. She asked for some time to finish them before joining the band to start work in the studio. The "new songs" were..Silver Girl, Destiny Rules, Illume & Say You Will. Even Lindsey has said he never knows what her songs were written about because she will take something from one relationship and use it as a "hybrid" to get to another thought or a whole other subject entirely. Stevie is FAMOUS for that! She will be writing about many different subjects simultaneously..that is her mystery and her gift. She does it all the time! I think it is really about Lindsey. Christine was already way out of the recording project before the song was written.
