WEBMISTRESS speculates:
As soon as I saw the title, I was reminded of Stevie's You're Not the One which was recorded by Sheryl Crow. Surprise! I think it's about Lindsey. It's the theme we see in so many of the songs: the sense that they are soulmates, yet unable to be together. There's been a lot of speculation about what "the kiss / right out there in the universe" is referring to. One of the contenders is the kiss on the lips at the Columbus 2003 concert, the first night of the Say You Will tour. For the purposes of this speculation, I'm going to run with that. What makes it so special is that it was a spontaneous full-on kiss on the lips. It wasn't the usual, obligatory peck on the cheek that they do; I think even the most diehard SnL romantics know that those well-rehearsed moves are orchestrated for the audience's benefit. That's not to say they're insincere, but they don't spring from the moment naturally. Maybe the Columbus kiss happened because it was opening night and they were both nervous, maybe opening night intensifies everything, who knows, but when Stevie leaned in and Lindsey put his hand on the back of her head and drew her lips to his for a kiss, the electricty was palpable throughout the arena. After all these years (I write this in 2015), I still remember it. (No, I'm not saying he doesn't love his wife.) That kiss was later broadcast around the world via the Destiny Rules documentary. It was indeed "out there in the universe" forever, and if you don't want to reveal your feelings, it couldn't have been worse timing!
The Angel reference, such a common one with Stevie and Lindsey and in so many songs, is past tense... "I used to think that..." Stevie has to let go. It's only reasonable; the man has a wife and family. They will never be together as a romatic couple again. He'll never be "the one" for her in terms of a lifetime lover. There's another very obvious reference to Lindsey with "he says, 'I'm so afraid'" - he seems more conflicted than she is, almost, less aware of what he truly wants. Indeed, he often gets angry, has flare ups, lies sometimes... he's not the perfect guy, but she knows that he's got a "light" inside of him, that he can be vulnerable, that he can be loving. There was a reason she "used to love [him] so much" - and that she thought they were "magic." In a way, they still are.
Sice note: Fleetwood Mac released an album prior to Stevie and Lindsey's joining called Mystery to Me. Coincidence or callback? You decide.
