I Still Miss Someone (Blue Eyes)

Written by J. Cash, R. Cash Jr.

Outside my door the rain is falling A cold, wild wind will come Well, there's someone for me somewhere But I still miss that one No, I never got over those blue eyes I see them everywhere And I miss those arms that held me Baby, when all the love was there Well, I wonder if he's sorry For ending what we had begun Well, there's someone, someone for me somewhere Baby, well, I still miss someone And I never got over those blue eyes I see them everywhere And I miss those arms that held me Ooh, baby, when all the love was there And I never got over those blue eyes I see them everywhere And I miss those arms that held me Baby, when all the love was there Baby, when all the love was there Baby, when all the love was there

Like Cry Wolf, I believe Stevie chose to cover this song because it expressed how she felt about Lindsey leaving FM. This song, however, is much less bitter and angry than the former. Instead, it is wistful and sad. Stevie has always been fascinated by Lindsey's eyes (see Blue Denim, No Questions Asked, to name a couple). She misses those eyes and the love they held for her, and this song puts that into words for her.

An interesting note: Stevie changed the original lyrics. In the original, the first section goes:

At my door the leaves are fallin',
A cold wild wind will come.
Sweethearts walk by together
And I still miss someone.

In my opinion, Stevie's changing of the first line from "the leaves are falling" to "the rain is falling" is indicative of her use of rain symbolism with regard to Lindsey in songs such as Dreams. The reason she changed "Sweethearts walk by together" to a repetition of "there's someone for me somewhere" is a little more puzzling. I think it plays into the important way she changed the next line's "and I still miss someone" to "But I still miss that one." Yes, there's someone for her out there, some man who'll be there for her... but he won't be able to replace that one. There's only one "blue eyes," and she'll never get over him.

Her subtle alteration of the lyrics to fit her own situation reminds me of what Lindsey does when he covers Try for the Sun.
